"Sea Change" is a short story by argyleheir based on Mary Renault's 1953 novel The Charioteer. It starts the morning after Laurie's mother's wedding, and picks up on the implications of Alec's canonical description of Ralph as "looking incandescent and elevated, like a candle burning at both ends".
Synopsis
After they wake and pack, Ralph runs Laurie back to the hospital. When Alec sees him there and the two chat, Ralph reveals more than he realizes.
Background
"Sea Change" was written for the contrelamontre LiveJournal community's "Gesture challenge".
Comments
The story elicited a number of comments, including the following:
- "Nice, very nice. I love looking at the Alec-and-Ralph dynamic, and this piece is so... thoughtful might be the term. It shows Alec's ability to read Ralph, and his obliviousness to some things around him."—comment by lorie945
- "Oh, this was very nice! You filled in the gaps so well; a few wonderful moments in the book that really left me wanting more."—comment by brightest_blue
- "Like your other stories, I particularly enjoyed the quietness of this fic, the hand-through-his-lover's-hair being particularly touching and sweet. ^_^ I might not be familiar with the book, but your fics give me a very pretty picture though they might be fanfiction. Hope to read more from you, argyle!"—comment by haydenthorne
