Sazh Katzroy is a main character in the 2009 science fantasy RPG Final Fantasy XIII and a minor character in related media.
He is described as follows:
A talented pilot with a cheerful disposition, Sazh is a loving father who has been raising his son, Dajh, alone since the untimely passing of his wife. When Dajh becomes a Sanctum l'Cie, Sazh tries to complete his son's Focus for him, but he himself is branded a Pulse l'Cie. [...] His son's pet chocobo chick is his invaluable partner-in-crime.[1]
Sazh is a friendly, cheerful man who is never without his curious companions—a chocobo chick and a pair of pistols. He is quick to banter, but also keeps a mature perspective on matters. Uncontrollable events have set him on his current path, but another purpose compels him to walk it.[2]
Fandom
Reception and Popularity
While the XIII main party as a whole has a sizeable base of very vocal detractors, Sazh—like Fang—tends to be universally well-liked by the fandom. He is appreciated for his level-headed nature, friendliness, wisecracking humor, love for his son, and adorable pet chocobo chick[3] On the flip side, while Sazh may not have many vocal detractors, he also tends to receive less attention from the fandom in general.
Sazh has been known by the nicknames "Chocofro" and "Chocobro";[4][5][6][7] the latter nickname essentially disappeared from common usage after the main party in Final Fantasy XV came to be known as the Chocobros.
In a 2012 Japanese poll of the official Final Fantasy forums, Sazh was one of 73 who placed among voters' favorite male characters; Sazh tied in votes with Rufus Shinra, Adelbert Steiner, Firion, Cid, and others for 32nd place.[8] In a 2020 NHK poll, Sazh was voted the 139th most popular character in the entire Final Fantasy franchise, out of 200 major and minor characters.[9][10]
Shipping
Compared to other characters in the FFXIII trilogy, Sazh's shipping scene is practically non-existent. This may be due to him being a 40-year-old father, while the next-oldest of his l'Cie allies, Fang and Snow, are about half his age physically and mentally. Sazh is very occasionally shipped with his friend Vanille, or with his companion Chocolina, the attractive human form of his chocobo chick.
