Lightning is a main protagonist of Final Fantasy XIII series. She is one of the playable heroes of Final Fantasy XIII, and she is the singular protagonist of Final Fantasy XIII: Lightning Returns.
Canon
Lightning originally is named Claire Farron. After her parents pass away, she decides to take charge in caring for herself and for her younger sister, Serah Farron, in Bodhum. She rejects "Claire", the aspect of herself that is sensitive and vulnerable, and assumes the name Lightning. She does not divulge her original name to anybody, a symbol of her desire to project a cool, collected, and distant personality that cannot be pierced by external threats.
In Lightning Returns, it is revealed that her soul was split into multiple pieces in order to preserve the memory of Serah at the end of Final Fantasy XIII-2. She awakens at the start of Lightning Returns as a hollow and emotionless shell; the rejected fragment of her childhood self manifests as a distinct personality in the dying world, a pink-haired girl named Lumina. At the end of Lightning Returns, Lightning regains her soul by accepting her vulnerabilities honestly. She absorbs Lumina's soul fragment to become whole again and regains the ability to feel.
