Sara/Ava is the femslash pairing of Sara Lance and Ava Sharpe from the TV show Legends of Tomorrow.
Canon
Sara and Ava met through the Time Bureau, of which Ava is a high-ranking agent to. The two started on bad terms as Ava believed Sara's team was unfit to deal with anachronisms, mostly due to the Legends being the very reasons anachronisms exist in the first place. However as they continued to work together they became true allies and eventually started dating.
Fandom
Speculation over a possible relationship between Sara and Ava started once season 3 began to air as it had been noted in press that Sara might get a more long term love interest.[1] As their relationship shifted from adversaries to friends in "Beebo the God of War" more attention was given to the pairing, which went on to gain the ship name "Avalance."
The pairing is partly responsible for some fandom migration between Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow. Supergirl, which already has a large femslash following, went on a short hiatus in February 2017, with Legends taking over its time slot till the end of its third season. Coupled with the fact that Legends is also set in the arrowverse and how Sara/Ava looked likely to become canon, many Supergirl fans began watching LoT for the first time.
As of June 2018, Avalance is the fourth most popular pairing in the Legends of Tomorrow fandom and the most popular femslash pairing.[2]
Common Tropes & Storylines
- Mundane AUs are very common, and place these two in a setting where time travel and superpowers don't exist. In a small number of these fics Ava is still in a law enforcement role, and Sara is sometimes a criminal.
- Time Travel tropes often appear as these two are time travellers. This can include the two been trapped together in the past, or meeting future or younger versions of themselves.
- As this is a canon pairing, many works are domestic and fluff fics, focused on the quiet moments of their relationship.
