Samuel Chung is a Daredevil supporting character appearing primarily in Daredevil Vol. 5 (2016-17) and Vol. 1 (2018-19). Sam operates as a vigilante named Blindspot in the Chinatown neighborhood of New York City and is mentored by Daredevil. There is a cameo appearance of a character with the same name in Iron Fist.

While some comic fans create fanworks of Sam, a large portion of his popularity on AO3 is owed to his appearances in the Dumpster Fires Verse.

Canon

Sam is an undocumented immigrant from China and takes a job as a janitor to help pay for his sister, Hannah. The Blindspot costume has an invisibility function using technology he invented and is powered by gas-station batteries. Chinatown residents have a small shrine dedicated to Blindspot, translated as "Ghost Brother." Sam is later employed as a legal assistant by Matt Murdock.

Sam's mother joined the Church of the Sheltering Hands and sacrificed herself to restore his sight.

The character Muse, slated to appear in Daredevil: Born Again, is primarily Blindspot's enemy.

Fandom

Fanon and Tropes

  • Blindness: Sam was blinded in the Sheltering Hands/Muse storyline and has his sight restored through inconsistently-successful supernatural prosthetic eyes. Some fans choose to either ignore the restoration of his sight or have the replacement eyes only make him partially sighted, with Sam still remaining legally blind. This is especially prominent as a bonding tool for Sam and Matt, as they are both blind.
  • Paralegal: Sam is employed as an assistant by Matt Murdock. Some fans choose to have him serve as a paralegal, often in the context of the Daredevil TV adaptation.

Pairings

Sam has no popular ships, but is occasionally paired with other vigilantes and superheroes his age.
