Sailor Moon AUs are a specific subform of crossovers or fusions where characters from other fandoms are placed into the setting of Sailor Moon. These stories and depiction can be placed into the Sailor Moon canon AU, or be independant of it. Instead of a classic crossover, in which several canons co-exist and characters of different fandoms simply "coexist", in a Sailor Moon AU the characters themselves, for instance, become Sailor Senshi and get sucked into the Sailor Moon lore logic (i.e. The Doctor becoming Sailor Gallifrey.)

Most often, a Sailor Moon AU rewrites a version of the Dark Kingdom arc with characters from different fandoms, where a Character meets a talking pet, gets informed they are a Magical Girl, gains a sparkly transformation, maybe a team, maybe a masked super hero love interest who didn't do anything, maybe a tragic past life on the Moon and reincarnated Moon Princess persona, or contains just a handful of these.
