Rimlaine is the ship between Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine in the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom. The name may also be used to refer to the ship between the real-life authors Arthur Rimbaud and Paul Verlaine, and the fictional ship and the RPF ship sometimes overlap. Alternate ship names include Verbaud, French Soukoku, and Frozen Hat.[1]
Real-Life Inspiration
Arthur and Paul were based on French Symbolist poets of the same names who were at one point in a sexual relationship generally regarded to have been unhealthy. After a breakup and Rimbaud preventing Verlaine from attempting suicide, Verlaine nearly shot him and was sent to prison for two years, after which they met at least once.
Arthur and Paul both take inspiration from both poets whose names they share.
In Canon
Years before Dazai and Chuuya: Fifteen, they meet while Paul is enslaved by his creator and not yet named Paul. Arthur helps save him. They become spy partners, with Paul taking Arthur's birth name (Paul Verlaine) from before he faked his death. Arthur gives Paul his hat. Paul, who feels like Arthur doesn't understand him but pretends to, betrays Arthur to save Nakahara Chuuya. He tries to shoot Arthur. Arthur escapes and later makes Chuuya use corruption to save himself, then gets amnesia and is unable to remember Paul's betrayal. During Dazai and Chuuya: Fifteen, as part of his quest to find out what happened to Paul, Arthur finds Chuuya and tries to kill him and subsume him into one of his subspaces to get information, but Chuuya and Dazai kill him. In Stormbringer, on the brink of death, Paul has a vision of Arthur, who apologizes to him. While Arthur was dying, he had turned himself into a singularity to save Paul's life, so he became not exactly human to tell Paul he accepted him for his not exactly human self. Arthur, via the singlarity, effectively becomes Paul's heartbeat. Paul spends the next few years mourning him and writing poetry in seclusion.
In Fandom
Though appearing mostly in side media, with both entirely absent from the main manga and only Arthur appearing briefly in the anime thus far, the characters and the pairing have a dedicated following. They are nearly universally shipped with each other, mostly romantically but sometimes as a QPR.[2]
Fem Rimlaine art is very common.
Verlaine's absence from the anime may be the reason why a relatively high percentage of video fan works of them are Gacha based.

- No Powers AU: In no powers AUs, Paul and Arthur are often married. Paul is often Chuuya's and others' older brother, but Arthur and Paul are sometimes Chuuya's parents or guardians.
- Canon Divergence: In which Arthur and Paul raise Chuuya instead of fighting or as a resolution to fighting
- References to or passages from the real poets' works, as well as more general sprinklings of French, are common in fics.
- Angst: Pretty much inherent in canon compliant works, since Arthur dies without Paul and Paul spends years in mourning
