ROM Hacks are a type of fangame that involves editing or altering the existing game to create a new experience. It involves modifying a video's game ROM (Read-Only Memory) and altering the game's graphics, levels, gameplay or other elements.
This practice is most popular with fans of retro games, such as Pokémon, Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog, Final Fantasy, Legend of Zelda, Mega Man and more.
ROM hacks are considered different to fangames. ROM hacks modify existing game files, whereas fangames are built from scratch often using a game engine.
