Phannie is a term used to describe a fan of YouTubers Dan Howell and Phil Lester (aka Dan and Phil). It is often used in reference to people who ship the duo. However, it can also be used to describe members of the Phandom more broadly.
Etymology
"Phannie" is derived from Dan and Phil's ship name, Phan.
The term first appeared on Urban Dictionary in 2016.[1] According to the recollections of one Reddit user, the term emerged as a play off of the contemporary Larries from the One Direction fandom.[2] At the time, members of both groups were notorious for making conspiracy theories about their preferred ship.
The term originally was used as a pejorative. One user of Urban Dictionary in 2016 defined the term as "a member of the phandom who is young (age under 12) and or newer to the fandom than others who is deemed as very annoying to older and or more experienced phandom members."[1] This user also stated that some Phannies wanted to date either Dan or Phil instead of shipping them together.[1]
Over the years, the negative connotation of the term faded as many fans began to identify themselves as phannies. This led to the common modern use of the term as a neutral identifier for fans of Dan and Phil.
Demon Phannies
The term "demon phannie" is parallel to the phenomenon of "demon larries" in the contemporary One Direction fandom.
