The PICO-8 is a virtual machine/game engine. Described as a "fantasy console", it has strict specifications that emulate video game consoles of the 1980s. These limitations are imposed in order to foster creativity and avoid developers from being overwhelmed by too many options.
A community has arisen around the PICO-8, attracting artists, programmers, developers, and others that enjoy the imposed challenge of working within the console's limitation. Notably, demakes of existing video games, as well as fangames in general, are popular within the community.
Some larger commercial video games have their roots in the PICO-8 community, such as Celeste.
