Reactions and Reviews
This is the Mirror V'Ger, and the differences are interesting. I liked the idea of V'ger's being a Klingon probe originally. And the name of it— straight from The Klingon Dictionary . The reasons for the breakup of Spock and Kirk— Kirk's mistrust, in that universe, of his feelings for Spock— were well-imagined. The lovemaking was well-imagined (assuming superhuman endurance) also— nasty turning nice. "I tried to rape you, and we wound up making love," Kirk says. I thought this was very interesting - showing the events from ST:TMP as they might have happened in the Mirror Universe. An original idea, well-done and believable. I especially liked Kirk's finally realizing just what he'd felt by recognizing it in the words of the song. [1]
This short but entertaining story is set during TMP. Spock returns to the Enterprise when he is contacted by an alien probe, just as in our universe. But in this universe he goes directly to his primary destination. And Kirk only learns that it is his returned first officer when he goes out to retrieve the body ejected from the strange ship, the shuttle Spock had used, lost. I thought it odd that Kirk would take the risk, considering he didn’t know who it was, but that’s my only quibble with this story. While Spock heals, Kirk thinks back on why they parted. He had begun to resent his feelings for his first officer. When he attacks Spock in anger, their struggle turns into a passionate embrace and they spend the rest of the night making love. The next morning, Kirk sneaks out of the room while Spock sleeps, for he distrusts what he feels, and talks himself into believing that Spock messed with his mind and created the emotions Kirk now struggles with. He decides to leave the ship and gets himself promoted off. By the time he understands what he has done and tries to contact Spock on Vulcan, it is too late. Spock has entered Gol and placed himself out of his captain’s reach forever.
Now suddenly, the Vulcan is back. After ejecting Spock with something that will allow him to talk without totally coming out of his healing trance, they learn the probe is of Klingon design, and, its mission complete, is heading back to its makers. Realizing that he has been given a second chance, Kirk stays by Spock’s side until he is ready to be wakened, which Kirk does with a kiss. This time, he vows, they’d do it right, and forever. [2]
