Reactions and Reviews

1996

There aren't many humorous K/S stories about; offhand, most of the ones I know are British. This one takes a light-hearted look at K/S fiction -- postulating that certain well-known zines have been written by members of the Enterprise crew (under pen names, of course) and that Kirk, Spock and McCoy are among the most avid readers of them.

Humour is a difficult thing to write; a lot of Trek humour, in particular, is based on silly parody and, for me, fails totally. In addition, I can remember reading somewhere of a story that was rejected by one editor "because my readers take their Trek seriously." I can also think of one rejected by one editor with the comment "Is this meant to be funny?" and I knew exactly what she meant, because that was my reaction as well.

This one works, and works well. It's lighthearted, it's not over the top, and given the premise. I could just see Kirk, desperately trying to finalise a report, being distracted by Spock who is reading the latest zine to come from the Enterprise press. [1]
