Reactions and Reviews
This story out of the collection begins with Kirk and Spock confronting each other with their feelings after having been meeting nightly to discuss their dreams.A rather strange thing to do, but presented as something typical to do. Spock wants to stop discussing their dreams and they have a lengthy discussion, straying to subjects of the arts and Vulcan until they talk about being "more than friends".
The difficulty with this entire scene is that most of it is thoughts and a small part is actual dialogue. This makes for a very static and uninvolving scene. The dialogue is really excellent, and when I just skipped the long paragraphs of thoughts, the scene moved nicely. Spock says that during pon farr he'd need a submissive partner and he didn't think Kirk could be that. So Kirk gets angry and Spock says: "I am a Vulcan, love is alien to me." which is a neat line. Kirk storms out and oops, Spock cries himself to sleep.
Then four pages or so of interesting Kirk thoughts, but presented uninterestingly, mostly because it was very repetitive. Instead of saying something new, the thoughts just went over and over the same subjects.
Except then, the AFB forte—the dream sequence. This author is the mistress of the master/slave dream sequences. Spock takes Kirk from behind, forcefully, powerfully, masterfully, and says: "Because it is what I want, and, even more, because it is what you want." Kirk struggled again, but with no result "It's not what I want," he protested, trying to wriggle away from the hand which was toying once more with his nipple. But as he did so, the warmer-than-human hand moved lower, seizing his limp organ in powerful fingers and caressing him until a familiar stirring caused him to stiffen and lengthen. "Isn't it?" Spock replied, his fingers carefully kneading the tender cock-flesh. But when he spoke again, his voice was more demanding. "Open yourself to me, Jim. I can give you pleasure or pain. The choice is yours."
So Kirk cries out as he climaxes (can you blame him?) and awakens from the dream. Spock comes in to ask if he's okay. They have a drink together and talk. A lot. I skipped all the internal ruminations and again just read the dialogue. Real biting, insightful things they say to each other. They talk about how they want to bond, but they both have fears. Spock fears Kirk can't remain monogamous, and Kirk fears he might be right. They decide to decide the next day. I don't know.... All day, Kirk keeps coming in his pants whenever he remembers in the dream Spock saying he loves him. They meet in the turbolift, and in an absolutely outrageous moment, Kirk climaxes just being held in Spock's arms as he says the dream words: "I love you, you know." Although would Spock say "you know"? They go back to their quarters and Spock initiates the bond with Kirk. There's a neat, slow build-up as Spock places his fingers on Kirk's face and they go slowly into the mental landscape.
This is one masterful Spock, obviously not to everyone's taste, but this is no whimpering weakling Kirk—he's all male and definitely to Spock's taste.
Some weird things during the sex scene—there's too much pain for Kirk so he has to stop and Spock says okay, maybe they're going too fast. I didn't think they were going too fast, I think they weren't using any lubricant. No wonder it hurt! Well, they try again later and it's fine.
Generally, I really have enjoyed many of the prolific AFB's writings. This one is a little on the weak side, but the collection is pretty good. However—buyer beware! I'm sure you've heard about the past and present difficulties with ordering any of these zines. So maybe just look for them at used zine sales instead. [1]
The lead story [in the zine], ONE FOOT IN PARADISE... is a story which takes the premise that Kirk and Spock have set up a nightly tradition of telling one another about their dreams, presumably to help Kirk cope with the nightmares he has. This has gone on for some time without problems, but when Spock begins to have dreams of his own, the story really takes off. This story is packed with sexual tension, and has some very interesting conversations between K & S. A very powerful sexual encounter is included, one which made this reader give serious thought to trapping the pizza delivery man and... well... you get the picture, right? [2]
