Reactions and Reviews

1999

It all starts when Kirk and Spock come back from the Roman planet mission and are all sweaty and smelly so they shower. But later, Spock becomes really withdrawn and reticent.

After three days of this odd behavior, Kirk demands Spock join him for dinner. And later, Kirk talks to McCoy about it. Eventually, they play chess and the truth comes out. Spock was really disturbed by the scent of the slave Drusilla on Kirk.

I thought this was a very inventive premise and I also really enjoyed their lovemaking—it was just right combination of sexual with the love. And the last line was terrific—how they didn’t mind the scent of sex on each other. [1]

2003

There may be a bit of a plot here, but not enough to get in the way of a strangely inspired romantic interlude. I like that this followed the episode Bread and Circuses. I've always thought Spock's revelation of his feelings for Kirk while he and McCoy are imprisoned is a fine example of how K/S was born. As it turns out, the scent of Kirk's liaison with Drucilla has had a profound effect on Spock. There is a beautiful scene where they admit their love for each other and proceed to prove it! Very nice! [2]
