The ship became popular after the release of the light novel Dazai Osamu and the Dark Era, subsequently the adaptation of said light novel to anime also brought more spotlight to the potentials of the relationship. During Dark Era, Dazai was a young executive of Port Mafia who seemed to care a great deal about his friend Oda, even gave him a nickname Odasaku. He later came to admit that Oda understood Dazai more than Dazai himself. In the end of Dark Era, Oda's death and last words to Dazai were so impactful that Dazai left the Port Mafia and changed his whole career afterward.

Furthermore, in another light novel of Bungou Stray Dogs series called Beast, Dazai created and sustained an alternate universe just to save Odasaku. The universe whereas the novel is set is not the first alternate universe that Dazai tried to do so, but he always failed previously. In fact, this Beast AU was successful because Dazai and Odasaku had never met and made friends with each other.

In the game Bungou Mayoi, the 0235 Dazai card has a quote about Odasaku: “Odasaku… You' re my friend. You mean the world to me…”[1]

It is confirmed that Shin Soukoku mirrors Oda Sakunosuke and Dazai Osamu. At the end of anime season 3 when Nakajima Atsushi mentioned Akutagawa Ryuunosuke's promise of not killing people with him, Dazai had said: " A mafia member who doesn't kill, huh? ", " You and Akutagawa-kun are both fighters. Just like us." and held tightly the matchbox - the memorabilia of Oda.

Fans reactions

Something about oda and dazai never being able to survive in the same universe. Something about both of their lives and perspectives in the world changing because of one another. Something about oda needing to die for dazai to change. Something about dazai's grief and promise to oda kick-starting the events of the manga. Something about dazai loving him so much that he creates new universes for oda to survive in so he can finally fulfill his dream of becoming a writer. Something about him sacrificing everyone's happiness and ultimately his own life for that end. Something about his biggest regret being that he'll never get to read oda's book. Something about them never being able to see a brighter future together in the end.

no because i want to cry everytime i think about odas striped shirt and tan jacket and ada dazais striped shirt and tan coat.... dazai thinking of what he can do to project the image of a "good person" and he mimics odasaku, maybe even unconsciously because oda is the epitome of a good person in dazais eyes

We talk about yanderes but have you ever come across maintaining a parallel universe at the cost of traumatizing many of the kids who looked up to you in the origin universe in order to ensure that your “best friend” (read: love of your life) is able to achieve his lifelong dream?

I can totally see Dazai’s side of it in the Dark Era light novel. But the way Oda talked about him really made it seem like he saw him as a kid who deserved to be protected. I didn’t get romantic vibes from his side.

I don’t ship it personally, but I totally understand why some people do. It was the only time we’ve seen Dazai emotionally invested in someone like that.

Okay so I ship Odazai in the sense that I believe that Dazai loved Oda, but Oda loved Dazai in a different way. Like I don’t think they would’ve ever had any sort of romantic relationship in the time they knew each other.

Like, maybe if Oda had lived, something could’ve happened years down the line- But we unfortunately can’t have nice things here.

Now I don’t think Dazai’s love for Oda was strictly romantic, I think it falls more into queer platonic. He wouldn’t actively seek out a romantic relationship with Oda, but he would definitely enjoy doing things with him and being intimate in a way an outsider would deem romantic. Oda was just… Dazai’s person. He would marry Oda in a heartbeat if he had the chance not because he was in love, but because “It’s Odasaku.”

Meanwhile, I think Oda’s love for Dazai was more strictly platonic. I get the impression that Oda does see Dazai as his age (16 - 18) and that’s why he’s kinda indulgent in Dazai being… well, Dazai. Like, yeah he’s drinking at a bar and he’s a genius Port Mafia executive, and Oda respects him for the unfortunate amount of maturity (for lack of a better word) he has, but he’s also a sad kid who barely gets a glimpse of a normal childhood.
