Orange Is the New Black is a Netflix original dark comedy-drama television series that is based on a memoir of the same name by Piper Kerman about her experiences in prison.
Canon
Orange Is the New Black follows Piper Chapman, a woman whose past history with a drug dealer (Alex Vause) eventually causes her to be sentenced to 15 months in prison. Piper aims to do her time and keep her head down so that she can return to her life in New York, however she’s quickly dragged into the drama and politics of the prison. Fandom
Orange is the New Black is usually abbreviated to OITNB. In 2016, OITNB was ranked number sixteenth in the Top 20 "most reblogged" live-action television show on Tumblr, losing thirteen spots in popularity from the previous year[1].
After season 4 the fandom become somewhat fractured due to the death of fan favorite, Poussey Washington. The death came at a time where there was already a larger discussions happening online around the Bury Your Gays trope which was sweeping the 2016 TV landscape. Some fans swore off the show as they did not want to support what some perceive as a use of the trope. Others noted that the death was not related Poussey's sexuality, but to her race, and that only talking about the Bury Your Gays trope took away from other important issues at work.[2]
In 2017, 10 episodes of season 5 were leaked online after Netflix refused to meet ransom demands to prevent it.[3] The leaks made some fans step away from OITNB related communities in hopes to avoid spoilers.
