Noticeboard communities on LiveJournal are normally organised by fanac or fandom and provide central clearing houses for fannish activity. They were popular in centralized fandoms, like SGA and dS and less popular in balkanized fandoms like BtVS. Before newsletters became widespread they were a main way to find dispersed fannish content on LiveJournal.
Major differences between a noticeboard community and a newsletter community include:
- Fen link to their own content (self-pimping) vs an editor linking to other fans' content.
- Each post generally contains one link vs each post contains a collection of links (like a mailing list digest)
