Nimona is a webcomic by ND Stevenson about Nimona, a strong-willed, shape-shifting sidekick to Ballister Blackheart, a supervillain. In 2015, a print version of the comic was published by HarperCollins and nominated for an Eisner award.

Film Adaptation

It was announced that the film rights to Nimona had been optioned by Vertigo Entertainment in partnership with Fox Entertainment Studios, making it one of the only western webcomics to be adapted into a feature-length film.[1] In 2021, however, the film was cancelled after Disney shut down the animation studio responsible for it after buying 20th Century Fox: Blue Sky Studios.[2] Unsurprisingly, this was viewed highly negatively by the fans, especially as the film had allegedly been about 75% complete at the time of cancellation.[3]

In March 2022, former staff of Blue Sky informed Insider that Disney higher ups had had issues with some of the queer themes of the film, including a same-gender kiss.[4] This revelation occurred alongside Disney's involvement in the Don't Say Gay bill controversy, and has merely added to a growing resentment and/or frustration at Disney's pitiful and hypocritical attempts and attitudes towards queer rep.

The project was revived by Annapurna Pictures and picked up by Netflix. The film was released in select cinemas and on streaming in June 2023.

Canon

Movie

Ballister is a former knight who fled after being framed for killing the queen. Nimona turns up at his hideout offering to be his minion, but Ballister insists that he isn't turning to villainy, just investigating to expose the true killer. Nimona reveals herself to be an incredibly powerful shapeshifter, and after a rocky start they learn to work together and save the kingdom, exposing some harrowing truths about the kingdom's and Nimona's past along the way. Ballister/Ambrosius is canon in both the movie and the comic, but the movie features an on-screen kiss between them at the end.[5]

Comic

Ballister wasn't framed for murder and does intend to be a villain, albeit one who "plays by the rules" which clashes with Nimona's preference for gleeful chaotic destruction. He hired Nimona on purpose (vs. in the movie Nimona turns up on her own initiative and refuses to leave him alone). They still expose the éminence grise director woman and unearth Nimona's traumatic past, but it goes down really differently.
