Neko (ネコ) 「ねこ」 is a term used by Japanese-speaking media fandom for the receiver in Girls' Love and/or Yuri media, including fanworks. In a way, it's synonymous with uke, though the terms have different connotations and use cases. In Japanese, the word is LGBT slang for bottom and its usage came before uke. Therefore, the idea of a Nekoseme (ネコ攻め) was completely possible.[1] Although this implies the word was once used in Boys' Love, now the term survives primarily in Girls' Love and in doujinka circles. The opposite of a neko is a tachi.
History
The word is thought to come from multiple sources. One is from the word wheelbarrow, which is a homphone of neko, since using wheelbarrow somewhat resembles spreading someone's legs open. Another is that it comes from the English slang "pussycat," meaning vagina. The last is that it comes from words associated with sleepovers, such as "to sleep," "sleepy," and "to sleep with."[2]
Later, the word was used by Doujinka to indicate the role of a character placed on the right in a coupling notation.
