Neko (ネコ) 「ねこ」 is a term used by Japanese fandom for the uke, primarily in yuri. In Japanese, the word is LGBT slang for bottom and its usage came before uke. Therefore, the idea of a Nekoseme (ネコ攻め) was completely possible.[1] The opposite of a neko is a tachi.

History

The word is thought to come from multiple sources. One is from the word wheelbarrow, which is a homphone of neko, since using wheelbarrow somewhat resembles spreading someone's legs open. Another is that it comes from the English slang "pussycat," meaning vagina. The last is that it comes from words associated with sleepovers, such as "to sleep," "sleepy," and "to sleep with."[2]

Later, the word was used by Doujinka to indicate the role of a character placed on the right in a coupling notation.
