Napstablook is a character from Undertale. They also have a cameo appearance in Deltarune.

Canon Overview

In Undertale

Napstablook is a DJ ghost who first appears as a midboss in the Ruins, blocking Frisk's way and needing to be battled to progress. They cannot be killed. On a Neutral or Pacifist run, they appear again in Waterfall, inadvertently rescuing the player from Mad Dummy, and can be hung out with after that. They have in-game social media and phone appearances in Hotland as well. They may be visited in Waterfall at any time after clearing the area.

In a Genocide/No Mercy run, Napstablook disappears during their first event and cannot be interacted with.

Napstablook maintains a snail farm as their main job. Unlike the other ghost characters who possess dummies, they have no interest in a corporeal body. They once had a cousin who worked with them, but he left them for stardom.

Napstablook is the only monster whose soul is not stolen by Flowey for the last battle of the True Pacifist route. During the end of the True Pacifist route, the player can find them together with Mettaton, and during the credits they are seen performing in a show with Mettaton, Shyren, and Burgerpants.

In Deltarune

Deltarune's version of Napstablook is a police officer. If the police station is approached, they will close the blinds from the inside and refuse to come out, a callback to the way they avoided being absorbed by Asriel Dreemurr for his boss battle.

Mettaton/Napstablook - More common in Korean and Japanese fandom than English-speaking fandom because it's cousin incest

Wank

As with other characters in the game who use they/them pronouns (Frisk, Chara, and Monster Kid), there has been wank about Napstablook's gender, with many fans interpreting them as nonbinary and other fans believing that their gender is free for players to decide.

The original release of the Undertale artbook referred to Napstablook with he/him pronouns. This was corrected in the PDF version of the artbook.
