Reactions and Reviews

1990

These two stories [My Soul Upon the Forfeit and A Secret Harmony] just floored me. The first one was both chilling and poignant, not quite allowing me to be offended by it because I felt I understood the motivation behind both mirror characters' actions, as immoral as they would have been in our universe. Both were desperate men, and our Kirk was the innocent victim that became the pawn between them. After the first story, I was all the more appreciative -- and amazed -- at the loving, tender aura that was maintained throughout the sequel as our Spock was ever so patient in helping Kirk to heal. Incredible intensity in both pieces and my hat's off a talented author. [1]

The more I read this author's stories, the more I like them. And I especially love her mirror stories -- they have just the right amount of harshness in them. Our poor Kirk is captured and tortured by his counterpart. I thought that the desperate feelings that enveloped the mirror Kirk were well brought out. He was so jealous of the close ties, not only between our K & S but those of his own Spock with our Kirk that he felt he had no choice but to grab his bondmate's attention by being brutal. [2]

1992

Violence and sadism mark this Mirror story. That's not my favorite kind of story, but when well done they are fascinating in a way. This one was told in the first person, and it was well done. [3]

1994

"My Soul Upon the Forfeit" This is a simple but unique story. I like this author's writing. It's deep and sensual, and she uses unusual words. This story is first person Mirror-Spock. An excellent Spock POV, regarding the nature of the bond and sex. Somehow both Kirks are present in the Mirror universe. The bond between Mirror Kirk and Spock is strained. Kirk is abusive to Spock, because Spock bedded the other Kirk. Kirk more or less forces Spock to rape him when they have sex, thus destroying any true communion they would have within the bond; and Kirk will not allow Spock to enter his mind. Kirk makes Spock fuck mainline Kirk in front of him. Pages and pages of wonderfully raw, rough sex. Then Spock wipes the knowledge from Kirk's and Scotty's minds on how to recreate the interphase, and returns them. So Kirk has Spock all to himself again, with no chance of another purposeful interphase. Good story! Even though this Mirror Kirk is not very likeable. Perhaps because it's from Mirror Spock's POV, Kirk's unlikeableness is tempered by whatever Spock values in him. [4]
