Peggye Vickers was a Star Trek: TOS fan.
Among other things, Vickers founded the LNAF, an influential fan club, and was editor of Chatter Boxes, an LNAF newsletter, as well as LNNAF Journal. As founder of LNAF, her comments also officially appeared in many other zines associated with the fan club.
In 1968, Vickers was the subject of Harlan Ellison's wrath. See The Words in Spock's Mouth.
Stepping Down from LNNAF
In December 1969, Vickers thanked club members for a thoughtful gift. From a two-page letter to club members:
Dear LNNAFers:
I want to share with you one of the nicest and most heart-warming moments I’ve ever spent. I’ve Just received in the mail a couple of packages which have a very special story behind them. I opened the smaller one first to find a terrific assortment of tapes—my favorite STAR. TREK episodes and a few Leonard Nimoy TV interviews. As the packages had the return address of Kathy Surgenor, I assumed they were from her, and wondered why she was sending me the tapes when she knew I didn’t have a tape recorder. I thought it was so nice of her, however, that I planned to go rent a machine in order to play them. Then I proceeded to open the larger package. In doing so, I overlooked, at first, the card attached to the lovely wrapping and was I ever shocked to find a beautiful tape recorder in the second package!!! I couldn’t imagine why Kathy would be sending me such a gift—then I remembered the card. I opened it and learned that the gifts were a Christmas present tp me £rom the LNNAF! I was speechless and remember saying things like, "Oh, no, I caii’t believe it! Oh, no! Oh, no!" I was very, very moved‘by the thoughtfulness which prompted the gifts and I rather suspect Kathy had been working on the project for**several months to have sent the gifts to me before Christmas. I had NO idea such a project was going on! And what an organizer she must be! Accompanying the tapes and tape recorder was a beautiful booklet of letters from all the members who participated in the project and I will always treasure their comments! Two fantastic sketches of Leonard Nimoy by Karen Flanery served as front and back covers for the booklet. I can’t think of any words which adequately express my deep appreciation to all of you for the gifts, but I do want to thank you all—very, very much. I will never forget your thoughtfulness.
Vickers then announced she had stepped down from LNNAF and had asked Gloria Lillibridge to take her place:
I must now tell you of the recent decision which it has become necessary for me to make. In order to insure that you will continue to receive publications of the calibre I have issued in the past and that you will enjoy a first-class club, I have asked my Vice-President, Gloria Lillibridge, to assume the reins of President of the LNNAF. As you know, I returned to work in September with high hopes for continuing to maintain the LNNAF as well as working—but it just wasn't meant to be. I didn't foresee the numerous hours of overtime I would be working or the travel which would become part of my exciting new job. As a result, I've found it impossible to handle the every-day duties of clubbing which are necessary to keep it running smoothly. Things have accumulated even more than they did in the past and, as a result, I now owe many of you replies and have orders still yet to fill. I hope you'll be patient with me as I try to get everything into good shape as I turn things over to Gloria. Leonard has been very kind and very understanding about my decision and shares ny feeling that Gloria is an excellent choice to carry on the office of LNNAF President. Gloria has been an officer of the club from almost the beginning and brings to the LNNAF a wealth of clubbing experience.
Lillibridge decided not to be the next president, and it was Louise Stange who assumed that role.
