Morgan/Sebile is a popular femslash ship between two sorceresses in the Arthuriana fandom.
In Medieval Literature
Morgan le Fay and Sebile are both former students of Merlin, often evil or morally gray, and part of a larger friend group (fannishly dubbed the Morally Dubious Sorceress Squad). In Les Prophéties de Merlin, it is mentioned that Morgan was a mentor to Sebile, suggesting they have an age gap. While quarreling over a knight, the two spend a night in bed together, then have a duel which is near-fatal for Morgan. Sebile deeply regrets her actions and gets their friend Breuse to heal Morgan. Morgan remains furious at Sebile, despite Breuse telling her how important their bond is, until persuaded to forgive her by another friend. Sebile kneels and begs her forgiveness, and the two are reconciled and forget about the man they were fighting over.
In Fandom
Due to appearing more in popular texts, having more appearances in modern media, and being related to many major characters, Morgan is a more popular and influential character both inside and outside of fandom. The low popularity of Sebile may contribute to the relatively low number of fanworks for this ship. However, it is prominent in fandom discussions and has a high approval rating. Sebile is almost exclusively shipped with Morgan, though the reverse is not the case.
On Ao3, about half the works tagged for Sebile are tagged for the ship. A higher number feature Morgan in a relationship with Arthur, Guinevere, or Lancelot, all of whom are more popular characters, though ships with Morgan would be considered rarepairs for all of the above.
It is generally accepted that this ship's popularity stems from LPdM, which is often referred to as having "canonical toxic Yuri." A number of fans and scholars interpret the LPdM duel as having BDSM overtones, and Wikipedia and various fans claim that they are explicitly lovers. However, no complete English translation of the text exists, so this cannot be verified. Verification is a major value in the Arthuriana fandom, and many want to read the text, so multiple fans have translated fragments of the text. A full fan translation may be underway, prompted largely by the desire to read about the ship. It has been speculated that a full translation could increase the ship's popularity, creating a circular effect: as undertaking a translation has been driven by fannish enthusiasm for the ship, so its completion might increase that enthusiasm.
