Reactions and Reviews
Although Anne is known for her humorous stories, she is equally skilled at more serious ones. In this story, set on the Enterprise during the first 5 year mission, Kirk and Spock have been bonded for 6 months, but there's trouble in paradise. Spock is acting like a super Vulcan, making everyone on the ship miserable, and shutting his bondmate out completely. Kirk is understandably unhappy about this. Spock has acted super Vulcan before on occasion, though, and as the story progresses we come to understand why. I love how Anne is able to describe what it is like for Spock to spend his life among humans and to be the only Vulcan on the Enterprise. She has a beautiful passage where Spock describes wistfully what it's like to never hear a word spoken in Vulcan. Kirk comes to a better understanding of himself, too, and his feelings about being bonded to Spock. After a happy reconciliation, Kirk asks Spock to teach him Vulcan, and the first word Spock teaches Kirk is a noun, which amusingly becomes part of their lovemaking. This is another wonderful story from Anne! [1]
