Hayao Miyazaki is a renowned Japanese director of animated short and feature length films. He came to Western prominence relatively late in his career with Princess Mononoke which was re-scripted in English by Neil Gaiman and distributed by Miramax. Other notable works include Spirited Away which won several awards, including the 2002 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, and most recently Howl's Moving Castle, an adaptation of the Diana Wynne Jones' novel, which was nominated in 2005 but did not win. His first feature film was 1979's The Castle of Cagliostro, which was based on the anime Lupin III, which he had previously worked on.
Miyazaki co-founded Studio Ghibli in 1985 with Isao Takahata.
Several of his films have a small fandom in the west, particularly Howl's Moving Castle and Spirited Away.
Fandom
Most of the time, fandom focuses on the movies that Hayao Miyazaki directed rather than the man himself. One prominent exception, however, is the well-known meme 'anime was a mistake'.[1] The meme is a monochrome image of Miyazaki, with the fake quote "Anime was a mistake" underneath. Although Miyazaki did not say this, many fans still believe he did. The most popular use of the image is to use it in response to 'cringey' or morally dubious anime - for example, it would be placed in response to an ecchi, lolicon or shotacon image, or when somebody is being a weeaboo.[2] Notable Big Name Fans include the American filmmakers, Steven Spielberg and John Lasseter.
Another meme involves his insistence that he'll retire and his last film will be his final one, only to then suddenly reveal another.
