Mononoke-hime (もののけ姫 Princess Mononoke) is a Studio Ghibli film directed by Hayao Miyazaki. It is one of the best known and most highly regarded of Miyazaki's films in the west.

Overview

Important themes are respect for nature, cooperation, and anti-war.

Mononoke-hime is often used an example of a story in which there is no clear-cut villain: Lady Eboshi takes care of vulnerable people such as prostitutes and people with leprosy, but her good deeds are to some extent undercut by her violent ambitions and her mistreatment of the environment; whereas San works to protect the environment, but she is single-minded in her hatred of humans.

A popular art meme, especially for shipping art, is to depict a ship reenacting the scene in which San points her dagger at a fatally wounded Ashitaka's throat, and Ashitaka replies "You're beautiful".
