Maya was a popular lead character during Year Two (Season Two) of Space: 1999 and is seen in 23 of 24 episodes. She does not appear in 'Devil's Planet'.
The character was portrayed by Catherine Schell who also appeared in the Year One (Season One) episode (The Guardian of Piri) as 'The Guardian'.
Maya was born on the planet Psychon, a place with a peaceful and happy culture, with one race, one religion and one government, prior to its destruction and her residency on Moonbase Alpha.
She was the daughter of scientist Mentor (The Metamorph), and resided on the planet Psyche prior to its destruction. She is a playful prankster, with a taste for practical jokes: the two Helenas & the ugly hag in 'The Exiles', Mr. Hyde in 'Journey To Where', 'and joking with Tony about his beer in a number of episodes.
Maya was taught the skill of metamorphosis by Mentor and is termed a "metamorph" capable of "molecular transformation". She is able to attain the form of an animal by knowing its molecular structure and it is established in 'The Exiles' that she can only hold the form for an hour. Many of her transformations are into Earth animals. She can even transform into fictional characters like Mr. Hyde in 'Journey To Where'.
All Maya's transformations are into living things, never into inanimate objects. In 'All That Glisters', it is stated that she can transform into anything organic.
