Sometimes in fanworks made in the 2000s, Marik is referred to as Hikari by Yami Marik and other characters, sharing this nickname with Yugi Moto and Ryou Bakura; this is inspired by the american dub calling the spirits from the Millenium Itens Yami, meaning Dark in japanese, with Hikari meaning Light.
Another way that some fans differenciate between the two Mariks is to call one of them Marik and the other Malik, with whom goes by each name depending of the person writing the fanfic; this was more common in works from the 2000s, with the practice becoming less popular over time.
