Marco Bodt is a minor character from Attack on Titan.
Canon
Marco is close friends with Jean Kirschtein and acts as support and a voice of reason to him. Marco dies relatively early on during canon when he saves Jean in battle and is killed by a Titan in in episode 13 of the anime and chapter 18 of the manga. Jean is the one to discover his corpse. Marco is rarely mentioned after his death.
There were popular theories while Season 1 of the anime was airing that Marco was still alive and was possibly a titan shifter [1], but these were eventually disproven as Marco’s death scene is depicted in Chapter 77 of the manga and Season 3 of the anime.
Fandom
Because of the lack of canon, most fandom activity for Marco is based on fanon or headcanons.
JeanMarco is by far the most popular Marco ship and one of the most popular ships in SNK fandom.
Tropes & Fanon
- Injured!Marco AU (Disability Fic): In canon, half of Marco’s head and one of his arms are bitten off by a titan. In fanwork it was popular to instead depict him losing an eye and an arm and recovering from these injuries. Sometimes this was the focus of a story, and sometimes Marco had already recovered from his injuries in the past.
- Military Police AU: Jean and Marco both wanted to join the Military Police while they trained as soldiers. It’s a common headcanon that they would have gone to the Military Police instead if Marco had lived.
- Dark!Marco AU (Darkfic): Often related to the theory that Marco was a titan shifter, there were also theories and AUs in which Marco had faked his own death because he was actually a villain.

Disability
Canonically, Marco died during the Battle of Trost District. In canon-setting AUs where Marco had survived the Battle, he was always depicted as having been maimed by the titan who caught him, instead of killed. Typically he lost an arm and/or an eye and part of his face to the titan.
At times it was much the same in non-canon settings. Authors often included a traumatic event, injury, or illness that left Marco in some way scarred, particularly in fics where Marco was aged up. There were fics where he had lost an arm in an accident, where he had a terminal disease, and where he was in a wheelchair. Some of these pieces focused on the injury and associated conflict, with themes of loss or recovery.
Other fanfiction left Marco’s trauma in the past, instead focusing on his relationships and newer conflicts. Many of these pieces strove to be positive portrayals of a character who was comfortable with his disability. It was a popular headcanon that Marco in a modern setting was an amputee.
