Excerpt:
Some people make a music video by stringing together some of their favorite clips from episodes and setting it to their favorite song of the moment. That's all very nice for them, but for me, it doesn't do a whole lot. There's no story. It's just watching Spike and Buffy kiss in ten different settings to the latest hit by the Backstreet Boys. The fanvidding world isn't much different than the fanfiction world - most fics/vids aren't all that interesting or unique, but there are certain artists who make it all worthwhile. Vidding can be harder than writing fanfic, because you’re limited to what the shows have given you visually to work with. It also has a smaller audience than fanfic, because people with slow connections can’t download large files easily, and because there are multiple formats for vidding, few of which work on all systems (for example, Windows Media Player files are no good for most of our MAC friends). There's more to making videos than just having all the necessary equipment and knowing how to do a cool cross-fade effect. Part of it is about the technical aspects, but part of it is about the art as well. It's all about having an impulse, a vision, and trying to realize that. Of course there are some vids that are just cutsey, fun ways to pass the time. Relationships, eye candy, narratives, alternate universes, humor. You can do a lot of things that are fun in a visual medium. But there is no mistaking that some people have a creative ability to make a video that speaks to a wider audience, while some people lack that innate sense of artistry.
