To have a "lost zebra" day is to have a bad day caused by a series of trivial things going wrong; your day is ruined and you just want to curl up and cry until it's over, but nothing truly terrible has happened. The term was used by some due South fans on LiveJournal.

The term was inspired by a scene in the 2001 fanfic With Six You Get Eggroll by Speranza. In the story, Ray Kowalski and Benton Fraser's three-year-old adopted son is crying inconsolably until Ray Kowalski figures out that he lost his toy zebra. Ray says sympathetically, "That is such a hard day.... I've had days like that.... You lose your zebra and your pictures suck, and all you wanna do is cross that day out."[1]

At Con.txt in 2006, a number of people in the Due South/C6D fandoms were given gift bags that were a survival kit for that kind of day, containing zebra finger puppets and juice boxes.

Sisterofdream had a lost zebra day, so I gave Dean one -- and introduced Castiel to fanfiction, because I hadn't written that cliche yet for reasons of plot. Season 5...ish, spoiler for the end of the season.
