Logical Decisions is a Kirk/Spock story by Faille.

It was published in the print zine First Time #5.

Summary

"Spock is driven into pon farr by flowers on the planet he and Kirk are forced on when fleeing the Klingons."

Reactions and Reviews

Spock has developed a new cloaking device for a whole planet, and he and Kirk must try it out. They end up in a shuttle, chased by Klingons, and have to land on a lush planet. There are scenes of Kirk with a berry-stained face, and a shy Vulcan with a very disturbing problem. I cannot go into depth here about some of the marvelous images, scenes, and ideas, but I read it much too fast. [1]

Kirk and Spock, testing a device which will make their shuttle invisible, are chased by Klingons and forced to land on a planet where Spock stumbles on a plant which in Vulcans induces pon farr.

Kirk panics upon realizing Spock's condition and decides to get him to Vulcan, entirely forgetting the Klingons in orbit. That I can understand, but what I can't fathom is his day nightmare in the shuttle with Spock pounding on the hatch, the window, etc., trying to get to him. That is a bit incongruous, especially as Kirk has had previous experience with male to male sex and knows what to do and expect. But also because after Spock's aborted previous pon farr, he made it his business to know everything about pon farr there was to know. He would know how to handle the situation.

Then without much ado, Kirk decides to help Spock. First Kirk sees it solely as helping his friend but as the condition progresses and the intensity grows, he discovers that he is in love with his Vulcan. Those previously submerged feelings have a sense of detached intensity and find their culmination in his discovery. A crescendo buildup, beautifully done. [2]

I was inspired to read this story by [name redacted's] review in last month's issue, and I'm glad I did. It's instantly recognizable as the work of one of fandom's most popular and prolific authors, under one of her many pen names. A substantial percentage of its 45 pages are devoted to sex, and it's one of the most loving, gentle and satisfyingly sexy pon farr stories I've ever read.

Like [name redacted], I was a little taken aback by the scene in which Kirk retreats to the shuttlecraft to ponder what to do. Kirk is usually more decisive than that. Perhaps this part just needed a but more justification. But once the partners committed to pon farr, the story was an unmitigated delight. The two men are committed to each other, almost in league with each other, and have lots of luscious sex in an equally luscious location. The transition from loving friendship to being in love with each other is captured expertly.

I missed the explanation of how the Vulcan plants and Kaferian apples and such wound up on this planet I expected the little mystery to generate a plot and perhaps some jeopardy for our heroes. But-just as well, perhaps, because who would have wanted to drag the pair away from such pleasurable doings?--the other shoe never dropped.
