Littlest Pet Shop: Popular is a YouTube series by SophieGTV (old username sophiegarrettt), and is the largest Littlest Pet Shop (YouTube) sub-fandom. It began in 2010 and it's most recent episode was released in 2019. The series is a teen drama, mostly focusing on the antics of two main sixteen year old characters in high school. SophieGTV utilized some interesting cinematography and techniques despite the home-movie quality of the series. She used such things as flashbacks, musical montages, and even added sticky substances to objects to make it appear as if the toys were picking them up.

It's unclear if the series will be continued, since Nov 2019 the LPS YouTube community has suffered a blow due to the Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) demonetizing YouTube videos that are child friendly. SophieGTV's most recent non-LPS Popular video was made in Aug 2019, a few months before COPPA, and has yet to upload any videos since. The YouTuber also deleted episodes 1, 2, and 3 from her channel, leading to fans having to archive and watch them with the Wayback Machine.[1] Episode 12 of season 2 may be the final LPS Popular episode as a result, despite having not neatly wrapped up the show.

Plot

The series mostly follows two main characters and cast of secondary characters. The main characters are Savannah Reed, nickname Savvy, (a brown wiener dog, toy #674) and Brooklyn Hayes, nickname Brooke (a blonde seal-point cat, toy #339). Both characters have a cast of parents. There are several love interests, including Sage Bond (a collie dog, toy #58) and Savannah's ex-boyfriend Tom Dawson (a white great dane toy, #577).

There are two seasons. Season one deals with some heavy themes, namely bullying, cheating, and body image. Savannah develops an eating disorder mid-season due to Brooke's comments on her weight.

In season one, Brooklyn moves away to California in eighth grade. The series starts out with Savannah then also moving to California to be met with a reunion with her best friend. However, Brooklyn is now a popular girl in the "Barbie Doll" clique and no longer wants to be friends with Savannah. Drama ensues. By episode three Savannah begins developing a crush on Sage, who is Brooklyn's boyfriend and thus off limits. Tom starts dating Savannah in episode eight, but cheats on her with Brooklyn. By episode twelve Savannah has become popular too, and the Barbie Dolls have started to fall in popularity as a result, much to their frustration. Brooke tries to humiliate Savannah at a party, but this just results in Sage breaking up with Brooke after realizing how mean she really was. Sage and Savannah kiss by the end, and a lot of complicated teen drama ends the season.

Season two, being incomplete and shorter, hasn't been neatly wrapped and may likely never be due to SophieTV's absents on YouTube after COPPA. It deals with themes of animal neglect, physical altercations, and lawsuits.

A new girl named Brigitte LeBlanc (brown and white collie, toy #1542) arrives at school, and it turns out that she was once close to Sage. Savannah becomes jealous and suspicious of her. After Sage left her, Brooke becomes despondent and neglects her pet cricket, who runs away and gets adopted by Savannah, who thinks the cricket is a stray. After bringing the pet to school and Brooke recognizing her lost pet, the two have a fight that lands Brooke in the hospital. Brooke blackmails Savannah with pressing charges if Savannah doesn't give back the cricket and break up with Sage. She decides to break up with Sage for fear of Brooke pressing charges.[2]

Fandom

Despite being a relatively niche microfandom, LPS Popular has its own tags on Tumblr full of fanart and memes related to it.[3] The tags related to LPS Popular are the titular "LPS Popular," "LPStube," and then the name of the creator, "SophieGTV." There are also many fan images on DeviantART as well. LPS Popular seems to have more of a fan presence than some canon LPS shows, such as Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own. LPS Popular is mostly popular with teenagers and young adult audiences in their 20s (who likely were children when the series began), based on the ages of Tumblr users posting in the tags.

There are numerous fan designs where fans have made the main characters, Savannah and Brooklyn, into anthros. Some fans also ship Savannah and Brooklyn together, but there doesn't appear to be a specific ship name for them. At least one artist called Savannah/Sage "Savage," but the ship name isn't used anywhere else so the artist is an outlier.[4]

LPS Popular doesn't have it's own category on fanfiction.net; the "Misc" category sorted into "Web Shows," which includes categories such as Markiplier, Hazbin Hotel, and Yu-Gi-Oh: The Abridged Series, also does not feature LPS Popular. Searching Littlest Pet Shop Popular on the site only pulls up one fanfiction, a crossover with Infinity Train. It also isn't a big enough fandom to have it's own category on Archive of Our Own either, though there are more fanfics for it there than on FFN. This makes the niche fandom more visual based than literature based, with fanart and vids dwarfing the amount of fanfics made.
