Clone Games
Clone games, aka spiritual successors, are games which avoid trademarked elements from the start, but seek to imitate with extreme attention to detail the gameplay and stylistic elements of a copyrighted game. They often do not hide this and instead advertise their games to fans of the one(s) which they seek to imitate. They may be understood as Original Works and Fanworks simultaneously, or as an original work with a strong fannish element.
Examples include:
- Freedom Planet - a clone of 2D Sonic the Hedgehog games
- Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling - a Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door clone
