Fangames often face copyright issues, even if they are not being used for profit. Sometimes, they are reworked to remove trademarked elements and then released, either for free or for sale.
Examples include:
- My Little Pony: Fighting is Magic - a My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fighting game that was reworked into Them's Fightin' Herds
- RWBY: Grimm Eclipse - a RWBY fangame which was later official game was released for PC on Stream in 2016.
- Spyro: Myths Awaken - a Spyro fangame, later given an Original Character protagonist and renamed Xera: Myths Awaken
Clone Games
Clone games, aka spiritual successors, are games which avoid trademarked elements from the start, but seek to imitate with extreme attention to detail the gameplay and stylistic elements of a copyrighted game. They often do not hide this and instead advertise their games to fans of the one(s) which they seek to imitate. They may be understood as Original Works and Fanworks simultaneously, or as an original work with a strong fannish element.
Examples include:
- Freedom Planet - a clone of 2D Sonic the Hedgehog games
- Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling - a Paper Mario and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door clone
