In Bridge To Terabithia, the female protagonist, Leslie Burke, dies when the rope she and Jesse used to swing across the river snaps, causing her to fall and hit her head and pass out, resulting in her drowning. The interesting fact is that her death and how Jesse copes with it is the premise of the book, as it was written by Katherine Paterson, whose inspiration came when her son lost a friend via lightning.
Much like with most fandoms that encounter death, the Bridge To Terabithia fandom responded with fanfics where Leslie's death never happened, that she survived her concussion, that she was saved by someone, or if they wish to preserve the message that Katherine conveyed, have someone else die in her place. It's no different to the Beauty and the Beast fandom with She's Not Dead.
