Fitz/Ward is the slash pairing of Leo Fitz and Grant Ward of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

In season one, Grant Ward and Leo Fitz are both recruited by Phil Coulson. Ward is introduced as a 'lone wolf' specialist, who excels at combat missions and espionage, but lacks people skills. Fitz is an engineer who was wary of taking on field missions.

Both characters are portrayed as been socially awkward in particular situations and have difficult relationships with their families. Fitz was verbally abused by his father and no longer has a good relationship with the man. Ward was bullied by his older brother, and later molded by John Garrett to become an emotionally detached sleeper agent.

When Ward is revealed to be a Hydra double agent, his betrayal of his team, has a huge impact on Fitz. He suffers cognitive difficulties as a result of a brain injury.

Their interactions in canon have been almost entirely antagonistic since this. Ward claimed that he ejected the medical pod into the ocean to give Fitz and Simmons a fighting chance, but this only angered Fitz.

With a sense of happiness and inner peace, and a lot of AUs, and none of your damn business

Tropes & Storylines

  • Both characters going undercover on a mission results in Fake/Pretend Relationship situations. Fitz's fear of field work often leads to Ward taking on a mentoring role.
  • Alternative Universe fics are quite common, possibly as a result of the characters antagonistic relationship in canon. Some popular tags in this pairing include Canon Divergence AU and Domestic AU.
  • Some angsty fics look at Fitzward before and/or after Ward is revealed to be a double agent.

Examples Wanted: Editors are encouraged to add more examples or a wider variety of examples.

  • A Porcupine for People Skills by spaceconspiracy. "What is your - study about?" Ward asks him while they sit in a dark van in the middle of a bloody alleyway, watching a couple of "potential national security threats" wait out on the corner. "I'm observing how the level of aesthetic countenance in an individual relates to their likelihood of having a discourteous personality type."
  • Five Times Fitz and Ward Slept Together by storiesfortravellers. Ward and Fitz have a friends with benefits relationship. There is much snark, especially from Fitz.
  • Whispers and Truths by Getthesalt. Fitz goes back down to Vault D after everyone's back from their mission. He hasn't said everything he wanted to say to Ward.
