Ladystuck Tarot is a Homestuck fan project to illustrate all of the standard tarot deck's major and minor arcana cards using exclusively female characters from said webcomic. The project was run by snilm and devil5honey.[1]
Inspiration
When the Act 6 Homestuck tarot project was released, there was much discourse in the femslash fandom about the use of Dirkjake for the lovers card, disagreeing with the rationale provided.[2]
In hopes of finding a productive outlet, hypeswap commissioned dumbbitche for an illustration of Rose and Kanaya as the Lovers card.[3] This inspired several Homestuck fanartists to create their own tarot deck centering women.[4]
Development and Release
Artist applications for the major arcana opened on October 1, 2017 and closed on October 22.[5] The characters and symbolism were pre-decided by the admin team in order to ensure the deck contained a wide variety of plot-relevant characters.[6][7]
The major arcana cards were released on March 3, 2018,[8] to much acclaim. With the success of this round, applications for the minor arcana opened on April 13, 2018 and closed on April 27.[9] Like the major arcana, the characters for the minor cards were pre-decided, and contained many more minor characters like Feferi and Nepeta. The minor arcana cards were released on September 8, 2018.[10]
Reception
On September 10, 2018, the admins expressed their desire to make a free print-on-demand version of the deck available to those desiring a physical copy. [11]Many of said admins left the Homestuck fandom shortly thereafter upon the release of the epilogues, so it seems unlikely that this will ever come to pass.
