Common Tropes in Fanworks

  • Modern AU: modern setting, not in the Hunger Games universe, where she knows or meets other characters from the series
  • High School AU or College AU: common because of her relative age
  • Historical AU: with World War II being the most popular setting
  • PTSD: Katniss shows strong indications of PTSD within canon. Writers will often explore ways in which she could cope with her condition especially in a world without the benefit of counseling and proper medications
  • Canon Divergence AU: varies - some examples: there is no Quarter Quell, Peeta is saved at the end of Catching Fire and Katniss is taken to the Capitol, there is no rebellion and Katniss becomes a mentor, Peeta is killed early in the Hunger Games and this changes how Katniss handles the end of the games. In general, diverging after the first or second book is quite common
  • Post-Mockingjay: a continuation of her story after the end of the series. Often includes PTSD and her relationship and eventual marriage to Peeta.
  • Asexual or Demisexual: some fans saw Katniss' lack of interest in sex as a possible indication that she is asexual or demisexual, and explore that characterization in fanworks

Katniss by CPatten. This piece being significant in that it is an example of art created before the casting of the films, and shows Katniss with the darker skin tone that is described in the books. As of January 2019, it has received over 10,000 views on deviantart
  • Whitewashing: some fans were upset with the casting of Lawrence for Katniss in the films, because they felt the choice did not fit with the description of Katniss, who was supposed to have olive skin, dark hair and gray eyes, and that it served as another example of whitewashing in Hollywood.[1] Also, some noticed a marked difference in the fan art produced before and after the casting of the film.[2]
