Description

From a flyer:

"Intertwined" celebrates the show's original concept — it's still a fairy tale, with gentle romance, adventure, love, tears and laughter (and a few surprises!). Take a wondrous journey with Vincent and Catherine, from the first awakenings of their ever-deepening love, through conflicts that conspire to keep then apart, with tender, romantic interludes that lead to a Happy Life in the Tunnels!

Issue 1

Intertwined 1 is a 74-page anthology and was published in June 1989.

It has sparse interior art by Gary Cutler and Barb Schwulst.

front cover of issue #1

From an ad in The Monthly: "Relive the 1st season magic!"

From the editor:

Thank you for buying "Intertwined. It may not be fancy, but it's lovingly written. I think you will like it.

To say I love Vincent and "Beauty and the Beast" would be the understatement of my life. "B&B" has consumed me! Since Vincent has come into my life, I am changed! This show has touched me in ways I never thought possible. What amazes me even more is that I am not alone. There are so many others who are affected in the same way. There are no strangers where "B&B" is concerned. We know, and we understand. That is all that matters.

Any comments on what you are about to read -- please write -- I would love to hear them. And while you're writing, keep those letters going to CBS. We should not be quieted with a promise of future episodes. We are a force that cannot be ignored or denied! Vincent will live as long as we, the fans, keep may he live FOREVER!!

Enjoy!

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 1

Vincent sees Joe kissing Catherine. Will he sacrifice his love for her happiness? (written Jan. 89). The Far Side of Someday — Begins where the episode "Arabesque" ended. Vincent must spend the day--and night!—in Catherine's apartment. (written April '89) The first in this series of zines deals primarily with Vincent coming to terms with his desire for Catherine. The author has a different perception of what Vincent would look like - she gave him a tail! Catherine discovers this quite by accident when Vincent is forced to spend the night in her apartment after catching the flu. In other stories, Vincent sees Joe kiss Catherine and decides to end his involvement with her so she will be free; another story is set after 'Arabesque'.[1]

Rather sweet should-they-kiss-or-not stories. The series as a whole hypothesizes Vincent has a tail (where does he keep it, in those tight pants?).[2]

Issue 2

Intertwined 2 was published in August 1989. It is a 148-page novel called "After the Silence."

front cover of issue #2
inside issue #2, the single illo by Barb Schwulst

The story includes a poem by Kathy Hall called "Vincent's Ode to Aloneness," as well as song lyrics by Nanci Folsom Casad called "Now is the Time." Both of these are embedded into the text, the latter as songfic.

This zine was also available in an electronic version (MS Dos and ASCII).

In the editorial, the author made it clear that this zine was "written in July '89 -- long before the premier of "Though Lovers Be Lost."

From an ad in The Monthly: "The fanzine for the Believer and the Dream!"

From a flyer:

ALTERNATE, HAPPY ENDING TO "TRIS" WHERE CATHERINE DOES NOT DIE! FROM THE TUNNELS TO A CABIN IN THE MOUNTAINS, VINCENT MUST CONFRONT HIS DARKER NATURE. CAN HIS HUMAN SIDE WIN THE STRUGGLE WITH THE BEAST WITHIN?

From the editorial:

I tried to please everyone (an impossible task, of course, and very challenging) by including all aspects of what we, the fans, want -- romance, fantasy, adventure, a little humor, danger/rescue -- it's all here, just keep reading.

For those who have read, "Intertwined I," you know about the controversial "furry appendage." If I offended anyone, sorry! (But I still think it is a neat idea.) Of all the letters of comment I have received so far, MOST readers have liked the idea. What do you think?

Please write with any comments, but if you want an answer, include a SASE. Don't forget about those LETTERS to CBS! Write and thank them for giving us back our show and ask for a full 22-episode season. LETTERS are the only thing that will keep "B&B" on the air! We must keep reminding CBS that we are a united force that cannot be denied!

From the zine:

Vincent -- what was once Vincent -- was pacing the far end of the chamber as if looking for a way to escape -- pacing on his hands and knees, completely naked, his tail angrily lashing the air, his fangs bared, with his body fur standing out around him like a golden halo. His snarls and roars echoed around the room.

"What's happened to him?- asked Catherine in an emotion-choked whisper.

"You said it yourself, " Father softly replied. "He's lost the struggle. I could see this coming, I could see he was losing that delicate balance. He's been under too much stress. After all he's been through..."

[...]

Vincent's fear slowly faded. He stretched by arching his back and reaching his arms out to the edge of the blankets, then shook himself. That done, he walked on hands and knees to the far end of the chamber, disappearing behind a cluster of small boulders.

Father wondered at that--had Vincent gone behind the rocks to relieve himself, and in doing so, was showing a little of his human modesty? It caused a glimmer of hope to light in his heart.

Although Catherine had kept her eyes on Vincent's face, she was dying to get a good look at his tail. True, she had seen it before, but never up close, and she knew once her curiosity was satisfied, she could forget about it. As they walked down to the lake, she casually let Vincent get ahead of her--but his tail was not there! She had assumed he would have to leave it hanging down over the trunks or coming out from underneath them, but he had managed to conceal it, obviously hiding it under his shirt.

Once at the lake, as Vincent gathered up dry wood, she spread out the table cloth with the blankets next to it. She insisted on starting the fire, afraid that Vincent would singe the fur on his hands. Once the dry wood was burning, they walked down to the water's edge. Only then did Vincent remove his shirt, and Catherine was able to see his hidden tail. It was coming out from under the leg of the trunks and was loosely looped around his waist.

Embarrassed because she was watching him so closely, Vincent pulled the furry tip from his waistband, allowing his tail to unwind and hang down behind him.

"I don't mean to stare, Catherine said quickly, knowing she was making him uncomfortable. "I'm just curious ..."

AFTER THE SILENCE" -- What did Catherine see? Why did she scream Vincent's name? This story begins where 'The Rest Is Silence...' left off, but it follows a different storyline than 'Though Lovers Be Lost." Vincent has completely lost touch with his human side. Catherine's love cannot save him—every time she comes near, he goes into a violent rage. From miles below the city in the Tunnels, to miles above in the mountains, Vincent must confront his darker nature. Can his human side win over the beast within? (This one has a HAPPY ENDING!) (written July '89) [3]

This zine begins with Catherine following Vincent into the cave but develops into a completely different story line than the show. Not everyone will enjoy seeing Vincent lose all touch with his human side - to the point of prowling around his barred chamber nude, on his hands and knees. If you can get through that, the story line lightens. Devin gets Vincent up to the cabin to recuperate where he's joined by Catherine. Part of this zine is double spaced and part single spaced.[4]

This novel is another sequel to the Trilogy and actually has a plot. Nicely written and quite romantic. No artwork worth mentioning.[5]

Issue 3

Intertwined 3 was published in March 1990. It contains a 115-page novel called, "Love Shall Find a Way."

front cover of issue #3

The interior art is by Pat Farrar, "Cat," and Jan Eastwood.

From a flyer:

THE STORY FROM "II" CONTINUES. DUE TO MISUNDERSTANDINGS, V&C DECIDE TO SACRIFICE THEIR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER'S HAPPINESS. WILL LOVE FIND AWAY TO REUNITE THEM? ALSO POETRY, ART, PLUS "THE GREAT TAIL DEBATE."

From the editorial:

After watching the third season, I knew my new story would have to be HAPPY! I'm not saying I didn't like the third season; I thought it was a very well-written and well-acted series of episodes. It might have been okay, if I had never seen the first two seasons! Whatever the third season was, it sure wasn't MY Beauty and the Beast! I like fantasy and romance. I don't care much for death and violence. As long as I am writing B&B stories, there will always be Vincent and Catherine. That is meant to be one word, because one without the other just doesn't seem right to me!

Yes, this is a mostly happy story. Vincent and Catherine get their "happy life," but as it happens in "real" life, there are a few conflicts along the way! "Love Shall Find A Way" is my B&B fantasy. These are the things that are not, but should be!

It includes poetry:

  • "Love Shall Find a Way" and "I Never Knew" by Casad
  • "Father's Eyes" by "Cat"
  • "Depth of My Dreams" by Kathleen Hall
  • "Dreams" and "In the Shadow of Love" by Julie Cornell
  • "Love's Pain" by Debbie Ristick

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 3

This volume involves Vincent and Catherine's accidental trip Above and their stay at a motel. It also contains one of the cleverest bits of dialogue in zine-dom: Catherine: “Then please ... make love to me.” Vincent: “Catherine, I know I am inexperienced in these matters...but I thought that was what I was doing.”[6]

This zine carries on from where Volume II ended. Catherine and Vincent are well on the way to their Happy Life. A stop at a roadside motel on the drive back from the cabin proves very interesting. However, when Vincent's blood test comes back marked 'non-human,' and when he finds out, it almost destroys their relationship. Devin is featured prominently.[7]

Issue 4

Intertwined 4 was published in July 1990. It is a 133-page anthology called, "Internationally Intertwined."

front cover of issue #4

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 4

Initially intended to be the final volume, says the reviewer. In this Continued Classic zine, Vincent and Catherine find their happy life Below, not without a few trials, and Catherine gives birth to twins (1 boy, 1 girl) both of whom resemble Vincent.[9]

Issue 5

Intertwined 5 was published in May 1991. It contains 148 pages. It is a novel called, "From Endings Come New Beginnings."

The artists are Pat Farrar and Jackie Kapke.

cover of issue #5

All of the fiction is by Nanci Folsom Casad.

From a flyer:

V&C'S HAPPY FAMILY LIFE IN THE TUNNELS BECOMES INTERTWINED WITH SECRETS FROM THE PAST. FROM A LONG-LOST JOURNAL COMES THE REMARKABLE STORY OF VINCENT'S REAL PARENTS AND THE EVENTS LEADING UP TO HIS BIRTH, REVEALING HOW ANOTHER BEAUTIFUL LOVE STORY TOOK PLACE OVER 35 YEARS AG

In this story, Vincent discovers he has a twin sister, named "R.D. (Chardonna aka Ardi). His sister has been raised as a captive in a Romanian carnival. He also finds a diary written by his mother in which she describes her life with Vincent's father. At the end of the novel, Catherine discovers she is pregnant again with twins, which they will name after Vincent's parents: Chabron and Ginger.

From the editorial:

Is this the last one? (I think so...) I really thought I was finished after IV, but then this new idea wormed its way into my head and wouldn't leave me alone until it got written down. It's that fresh and original idea I was looking for. I hope you like it. Please write and let me know what you think!

I would like to thank Audrey Folsom for listening, and LISTENING, and LISTENING not only for this time, but ever since Dec. '87, when B&B first came into my life. She's an excellent proofreader and the World's Greatest Mother! Thanks to Cami and Gary Cutler (proofreading, cover design), and Beastfriends Lois Ayers, Linda Roberts, and Gwen Lord, too!

I would also like to thank artist Pat Farrar. This lady is remarkable! I send her descriptions (Make "Chardon look like my kitten Andre!" "Make Ginger a 'feminine' Ron Perlman!") and she sends back masterpieces! She also put up with my "just one more" requests. Thanks, Pat! You are so nice and so very talented!

Thanks to Jackie Kapke for the "tail" pictures, both the one published and the ones I didn't dare print!

[...]

Please write to Republic Pictures and Ron Koslow. They need to know we're still out here, starving for THE MOVIE!

Reactions and Reviews: Issue 5

A Vincent's origin story that takes place five years after his marriage to Catherine. Through Devin, Vincent finds not only his sister, but a diary left by his mother describing the great love between his parents.[10]

The story continues with Catherine and Vincent but a large part of this zine focuses on the love between Vincent's parents. Five years have passed since Catherine and Vincent were married. During his travels in Europe, Devin finds a Vincent look-alike and brings him back to the Tunnels. 'He' turns out to be a "she' and Vincent's twin sister. When her husband shows up to take her home, Vincent learns the truth about his birth and why he was abandoned on the steps of SL Vincent's Hospital. From his mother's diary, he and Catherine learn about the special love his parents shared.[11]
