Reactions and Reviews

1998

Compelling insights into Sarek, his thoughts, feelings on his son’s death, on Kirk. The sacred vow he makes to preserve his son’s t’hy’la’s honor equals the vow Kirk makes to get Spock’s katra to Vulcan, no matter what. [1]

2008

If you are, like me, addicted to the events in STII: the death of Spock and its effect on James T. Kirk, then you‘ll like this examination of Sarek‘s visit to Earth. It begins with Sarek‘s arrival at Kirk‘s apartment and allows us access to some of the thoughts that have accompanied him on his walk to that destination. Through his perusal of the building where Kirk lives, we are able to nicely visualize the setting.

The meld he initiates with Kirk has always fascinated me, because I want desperately to know what it was he saw. In this version, the dialogue we heard in the movie is nicely interwoven with the author‘s interpretation of what Sarek encounters in Kirk‘s troubled mind. He learns that Kirk is a man with a dynamic personality, and a man of honor. The human does not fight his mental intrusion, instead seems to welcome Sarek, leading him to the painful memories of Spock‘s death. The senior Vulcan finds a severed link, the psychic injury that Kirk so aptly describes as an open wound.

As we saw on screen, being forced to re-live his last moments with Spock nearly breaks Kirk, but now we see that memorable scene with an even greater insight and intensity. Again, the continued use of words we heard spoken brings a sense of reality to every paragraph. 'You will find a way, Kirk,' Sarek commands. To which, we know, Kirk answers without hesitation. 'I will.'

I can never read too much of this. [2]
