Summary

"The only menage a trois story ever to appear in NAKED TIMES! A story we think even the most adamant anti-menage fans will enjoy. K/S/Starfleet intelligence!"

Reactions and Reviews

1986

IN DOUBT OF SUNRISE is perhaps the most unusual story in the zine, introducing a third party. Avin Ryce is a female Federation Intelligence officer being transported by the Enterprise to her next mission. Kirk, of course, falls into her bed even if not in love, and Spock's resultant reaction is wonderfully handled. A first-time story with lots of surprises and interesting ideas. [1]

1993

"Humans might label it as love. Vulcans might label it as a dangerous mental illness."

Spock begins to realize his love for his captain after about 3 years of their mission. Excellent beginning combining Spock's ruminations with "The Watcher" - mediation shrine and its incense smoke.

The Enterprise takes on board some Federation Intelligence officers, one of which is a woman for whom Kirk finds very interesting. Too interesting from Spock's perspective.

There's a funny and poignant scene as Spock drinks too much at a reception when he sees Kirk with that woman. Spock keeps repeating the litany in his thoughts of "love-under-control".

"He would fall in love with Kirk on a daily...hourly...basis."

Towards the end, Kirk, Spock and the woman have a menage a trois, which I didn't buy for a second. If Kirk and Spock had already been lovers, maybe, but being as it was supposed to be the first time, no way! Despite the fact that I had to completely suspend belief, I really enjoyed this sequence. But it was a great surprise ending. Very clever. [2]

1998

An interesting group of people are aboard the ENTERPRISE -- intelligence officers coming off a long assignment. Their leader, naturally, is a very intriguing woman who just as naturally seems to be spending an inordinate amount of time with the ship’s captain. Spock deduces this while morosely studying the chess table that’s been unoccupied since her arrival.

This may be sort of routine stuff, but it is well- written and moves you right along.

Spock’s so unnerved he gets pretty soused at a reception for the group. Kirk has been conspicuously absent from the gathering as has the I.O., Ms. Ryce. Kirk throws Spock for a loop when he leaves Ms. Ryce in the first officer’s hands for a late-night tour. I loved it when upon returning to her quarters, she intuitively told Spock she was not his rival.

Spock can’t take his eyes away from the bed. “....the bed this human woman had obviously shared with his captain.” She surprises Spock by making a very astute observation: there appears to be only two things important to Kirk “...his ship. And you.” Following this, Kirk joins them and an extremely intriguing scene unfolds. Reading it I was thinking that no one could have written it any better or been any more true to the characters. I THOUGHT!!

Then it was my turn to be thrown for a loop! A threesome was planned! Now, I would have preferred it take a different direction as I am selfish with Kirk’s and Spock’s love and lust. I prefer it be kept just between the two of them. But to be honest, it wasn’t bad. And at the end, said intelligence officer filed a top-secret report assuring HQ that the best team in the fleet would remain together. A different notion. [3]
