Ianto Jones is a member of the Torchwood Institute on the TV show Torchwood. He is initially an administrative figure, but later takes a more active role on the team's missions.

Along with Captain Jack Harkness, Ianto Jones is one half of the canonical slash pairing Jack/Ianto. Both Ianto and the pairing are immensely popular among fans.

Ianto's death in season three led to a fan campaign (Save Ianto Jones) to have him written back into the show.[1] Fans created Ianto's Shrine, a memorial wall on the Cardiff waterfront where Torchwood was filmed; see flambard's images on flickr, blog post on Queerattitude.

Background

It appears that Ianto was raised in a poor neighborhood in or near Cardiff. He has a sister, Rhiannon Davies, and nephew David, niece Mica, and brother-in-law Johnny, but it is implied that during the course of the series he doesn't see or communicate with them much.

Ianto's mother is never mentioned. His father worked at Debenhams, a department store. Ianto nostalgically recalls attenting the cinema with his father when he was twelve(?), but later there are allusions to an incident in which his dad pushed him on a swing "too hard" and broke Ianto's leg.

Ianto was not an exceptional student, and has one conviction for shoplifting. He left home shortly after his father died, and may have drifted for a while before he joined Torchwood in London. At the time that the Daleks and Cybermen devastated that branch of the organization in the battle of Canary Wharf, Ianto was in a relationship with fellow employee Lisa Hallett, who was partially cyberized. The battle occurred during the New Who season two finale, in which Ianto and his girlfriend do not appear.

After the battle, Ianto brought her to Cardiff to care for her while he begged for a job from Jack Harkness. It is unknown when his sexual relationship with Jack began, as its complex course remains largely incidental to the show's plots.
