A long story in which Spock takes Kirk to Vulcan with the intention of introducing his lover to his family. An interesting if not always pleasant view of what it is to be a Vulcan and Kirk and Spock learn a few things about each other that they might well have preferred not to know. The section where Spock has to baby-sit a sehlat cub is nicely done and provides a welcome relief to the harsh rule of 'Tradition'.

There are many aspects of this story that are jarring or unbelievable. First, there was the reference to an Organian hotel room. Energy beings don't need hotel rooms. I definitely don't understand why Vulcans would give the "burden" of property to their children. If property is such a terrible burden, why give it to their children': I am also puzzled by why Spock's artist cousin Seurat drew Spock dead. Is it hidden hostility, or do these Vuicans find aesthetic value in corpses: I liked the fact that male sehlats take care of the children. I wonder if Spock's parents got a male sehlat to tend Spock when he was a child. It would make a great deal of sense considering their busy life. However, it makes no sense to me at all that a Vulcan woman whose husband has just been killed wouid be concerning herself with Spock's personal life. She should be grappling with her broken bond or preoccupied with preserving his Katra. Instead she lectures Spock and then lies down to die. This is bizarre, and totally incredible.
