Hobbit Day is celebrated on the mutual birthday of Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins, characters in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings series of novels by J.R.R. Tolkien. Bilbo and Frodo are both Hobbits, providing the inspiration for the day's name.

The holiday was officially declared by the American Tolkien Society as part of Tolkien Week in 1978. The event is celebrated in different ways by fans, often incorporating the traditions of other major annual holidays. [1]
