Himemiya Anthy is the secondary protagonist and possibly secondary antagonist of the anime series Shoujo Kakumei Utena/Revolutionary Girl Utena. She is the catalyst for most of the events in the series, though the degree to which she actively chooses them is the subject of much debate, in canon and in fandom.

Anthy is later revealed as a complex character despite being initially depicted as meek and lacking goals (other than being the Rose Bride) and reactions, even when verbally or physically abused by others. As the story progresses, she is shown to be capable of great love, loyalty, and compassion. She is also capable of morally ambiguous acts, resentment, and even inciting discord. Anthy's character is deliberately ambiguous and open to interpretation.

Canon

Fandom

In their 20th Anniversary retrospective, Giovanna and Yasha, the administrators of the Empty Movement, noted the fandom's shifting perspective on Anthy over the years.[1]

As for Anthy, the universal tendency early on was to see her as powerless, sometimes mindless, barely even a person at all. Way back then, she was just a poor useless creature whose main purpose was to prove Utena was a Prince. That perspective seems to have died with the maturation of the fanbase. People are more willing to attribute some strength to Anthy and see her with nuance.

Ships

Anthy is usually shipped with one of her canonical love interests, Tenjou Utena. The Anthy/Utena yuri ship is the largest in the fandom. Anthy is also shipped with other main characters who show an interest in her, including Saionji Kyouichi, Kaoru Miki, and her brother Akio.
