The novel was adapted to a webseries of the same title. Because if the restrictions placed on such content in China, the story was changed in a number of ways compared to the original novel.
- In the show there is no canonical gay ship, unlike in the novel. In the novel, Zhao Yunlan is openly bisexual.
- In the show the Underworld (Dixing) is populated by aliens who landed on Earth and were pushed back there after a period of fighting. Shen Wei is their envoy, trying to keep the peace between the two worlds. In the novel, Dixing is populated by demons and Shen Wei, while keeping the title of Envoy (Heipaoshi - Black Cloaked Envoy), functions more like a guard.
