Girls Today was a recsletter for Harry Potter femslash. It was founded on LiveJournal in August 2005 and moved to InsaneJournal in August 2007. It was updated roughly once or twice a week from August 2005 to February 2008, and returned briefly in December 2008. It was last updated on December 16, 2008.
History
Girls Today was founded in August 2005 for "recs of art, fic, meta, and other information pertinent to HP femmeslash."[1] The community was initially run by foreword and cursescar. In early 2006, divinereverie, kethlenda, and violetfishy were added as reccers.
Move to InsaneJournal
Following the events of Strikethrough and Boldthrough, Girls Today took a short hiatus in August 2007. kethlenda, one of the two mods at the time, wrote:
- "There has been a lot of discussion on LJ lately about LJ/Six Apart's less-than-consistent policies about adult-rated fanworks. What I don't want is for this newsletter to inadvertently lead some troll to someone's sixth-year Ginny/Luna fic and lead to a TOSing."[2]
When posting resumed at the end of the month, it was announced that the newsletter would move to InsaneJournal. Subsequent newsletter content was posted to InsaneJournal, and updates at LiveJournal contained only links to the corresponding IJ post. The last two Girls Today updates, posted in December 2008, were posted to both communities.
Moderators at the InsaneJournal community included green_amber, foreword, and freckles42.[3]
Events
The Fall Femmeslash Fest
In 2005, Girls Today and Aspen hosted a Fall Femmeslash Fest for femslash fic and art. It was officially announced on August 29, 2005 after a poll to gauge interest, and it ended on October 9, 2005.[4] Six artists and 14 authors submitted fanworks for the fest, featuring a wide variety of femslash pairings.[5]
