Reactions and Reviews
1991
Hmm. I liked the idea of Lady Luck and Death being face-to-face with each other while toying with our heroes' lives, but it seemed if this story was going to insist on being a vignette that it needed a tighter focus. It starts off as a h/c incident, drifts into an awareness of sexual feelings, then jumps to Spock's death, then to his resurrection -- all within a few pages. There were a lot of other things that happened in Kirk and Spock's lives concerning Luck and Death, and since it would be impossible to touch on all of them, then it seems the vignette would have been more powerful if it had dealt with a single particular incident. Just a thought... In any case, I did like the statement about Death and Lady Luck... "By their natures, they were condemned to experience vicariously." If man insists on personifying such powerful, abstract entities, I suppose he can comfort himself with the belief that mortal existence is superior. [1]
Clever vignette full of rich images. The uniqueness of this story made me wonder, as I do sometimes when I've read a particularly striking and original story, "Why didn't I think of that? [2]
This story is certainly different. I didn't dislike it, but I don't believe I liked it very much either. Yet I must comment favorably on the highly desirable asset of a slightly different approach. [3]
1992
I enjoyed the interesting layout of this story, but felt it was rather rushed. I also felt it needed more solid breaks between the incidents rather than just the Luck/Death conversations to make the advance of time more clear. [4]
