5 Seconds of Summer is an Australian pop-punk band consisting of four members: Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood, and Ashton Irwin. Their first album was released in June 2014, but they have had a presence on YouTube since 2011. (See Wikipedia, Archived version[1].)

Related Bands

There has been quite a bit of overlap with the One Direction fandom. 1D's Louis Tomlinson discovered the band on YouTube, and 5SOS toured with One Direction on their "Take Me Home", "Where We Are", and "On The Road Again" tours in 2013, 2014, and 2015 respectively. There is also some overlap with All Time Low and Panic! at the Disco, as they have written songs with both bands. 5SOS has general connections with other Bandom (Decaydance+, My Chemical Romance) acts like Fall Out Boy and the like due to personal connections and being influenced by their music. Both Joel and Benji Madden from Good Charlotte and John Feldy from Goldfinger took an early mentorship and album production role with 5SOS. They're also associated with pop rock act Hey Violet, having previously signed them to their label Hey or Hey Records, and lovelytheband, whose lead singer Mitchy Collins is a long time friend of the band.

Fandom History

The 5SOS fandom is more commonly known as the 5SOS fam, as the members claim that the fandom are like family to them. The 5SOS fam has been around since 2011, when 5SOS first started posting videos, but has grown significantly since the band first went on tour with One Direction in 2013. Early 5SOS were known for their fan interactivity through social media and live streams; while this has been limited since their fame has increased, they still make attempts to reach out when they can, including a dedicated email for fan messages.

The 5SOS fandom is a mainly female fanbase, which Ashton Irwin has compared to being like Fall Out Boy's own. The band does not like being referred to as a boy band, as they're an independently formed rock music act. Their ties to One Direction, the band's initial marketing, all four band members on vocals, the use of various co-writers on their songs, and the lack of a clear frontman (often mistaken by media as Luke Hemmings) has led to public and media confusion about their "boy band" status.

Due to 5SOS' status as one of the few rock acts in the 2010s to have achieved mainstream radio success, 5SOS fandom tends to share musical interest in pop rock/pop punk/alt rock acts similar to 5SOS and more mainstream pop acts. In June 2018, 5SOS released their third album "Youngblood", a transition from their original pop punk sound to a more alt rock sound. Despite the radical shift, 5SOS fandom has been largely positive towards the change with the band framing it as an attempt to mature alongside their fanbase.

Despite the fandom overlap between 5SOS fandom and many Bandom (Decaydance+, My Chemical Romance) acts, some in bandom don't consider 5SOS a "legitimate" rock act or believe they're ripping off bandom acts and are dismissive accordingly, an attitude that bandom personalities like Pete Wentz have disagreed with.

5SOS is generally pronounced "5Sauce"; some use "5-ess-oh-ess", but this is generally not the case.
