Welcome to FanloreProject:Romantasy! This project was created in order to add more info to Fanlore about fandom for Romantasy books. It was also created to be a place to brainstorm, add links, and hopefully be a place of enthusiasm and shared knowledge.

What is Romantasy?

Romantasy is a portmanteau of "romance" and "fantasy," and usually refers to books/series where the setting is fantastical and love is the heart of the story. About these books, a 2024 Washington Post article says, "without the romance, the book falls apart."[1]

Popular books under this genre include A Court of Thorns and Roses and other books by Sarah J. Maas, and The Empyrean series (Fourth Wing and Iron Flame). These books are incredibly popular and have fandom interaction on twitter/x, tumblr, tiktok, etc., but not much of a presence on fanlore.

Wanted

Add any series you want to see added! I only started with the Maas books because I've read them and know how popular they are.

  • Maybe Maggie Stiefvater's stuff?? I don't know her books at all, but I'm seeing it get mentioned on goodreads and tumblr a little bit -- Quaelegit (talk) 09:45, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
  • Holly Black even??? I've actually read Tithe and I think it fits? (Although I've never read any SJM, so I'm judging by explanation of "Romantasy" here and in that article). Anyways The Cruel Prince (wow, surprised that's still a red link!) has a much bigger fandom (and is listed in that Goodreads romantasy shelf) -- Quaelegit (talk) 09:45, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

Meta

There are lots of meta and meta adjacent discussion I've been witness to that I need to find and we can figure out how to work into the pages. There are pro and anti arguments for almost all characters. Also some fandom drama around wlw and mlm shipping that needs to be included-- if i can find it again. woahpip (talk) 17:24, 15 March 2024 (UTC)

Some Guidelines

Create stubs with reckless abandon. You may create new categories when you have or expect to have at least ten pages that fit within it (and the category fits within the existing site structure). Category titles should be plural, even if the word/phrase used to add it is singular. (See Help:Categories.)

If you can, please check the Fandoms by Canon Type before creating new categories. The Fan Activities category may also contain pages.

If you are able, make redirects as needed so that people looking for familiar terms can find them.

Some Things to Keep in Mind

  • Information for new editors can be found in our New Visitor Portal. Among other things, it explains how to make an account, how to start a new page, and includes a lot of other helpful information.
  • Discussion on this project's Talk page is encouraged, as is discussion on individual article Talk pages.
  • All edits, whether big, tiny, or in-between, are welcome.
  • You don't have to be an "expert" on a subject. Adding what you know and feel passionate about are pieces of the puzzle, and ones that hopefully inspire others to expand on the topic.
  • All typos, mistakes, and errors are easily corrected. Don't let perfection hobble you.
  • Remember that Fanlore, like all wikis, is a collaborative effort, and may be edited by anyone.
  • Pages are not "owned" or controlled by any single person or group of people.
  • Pages and the information on them are only as robust, encompassing, and accurate as the information added by interested and enthusiastic fans like you.
  • Fanlore practices and encourages a Fanlore:Plural Point of View.
